Kurdish forces 'dangerously outmatched' by heavily armed IS in Kobane: UN Envoy to Syria

ANI Washington

The United Nations special envoy to Syria has reportedly warned that that the Kurdish fighters defending the strategic Syrian city of Kobane are "dangerously outmatched" as the Islamic State (IS) advances through the town.

Staffan de Mistura said that the Kurdish army is defending the city with great courage but are very close to not being able to do so because they are trying to take on a group that possesses tanks and mortars with normal weapons, reported the CNN.

Mistura called on the international community to step in and defend them. He said that the world could not allow another city to fall into the hands of the IS.

If the group captures Kobane, it would gain a complete control over a stretch of more than 100 kilometers between Raqqa, Syria and Turkey.
