Kurdish officials said that they have recaptured the town of Zumar in northern Iraq from Islamic State militants in a battle to secure a Shia pilgrim route.

Zumar town is 60km north of the city of Mosul that was captured in June by IS militants.

According to the BBC, Kurds have successfully ejected IS fighters from Jurf al-Sakhar near Baghdad.

The United States military said that they launched 22 airstrikes against IS on Friday and Saturday.

IS has seized large parts of Iraq and Syria since the month of June, prompting airstrikes to help ground forces fight IS militants.
