Lanka opposition party lawmaker's leg amputated after accident on Southern Expressway

A parliamentarian of Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) Ajith Mannapperuma's right leg below the knee has been amputated as a result of the injuries he received in an accident yesterday.

Mannapperuma was injured in a road accident Sunday on the Southern Expressway near the 40th kilometer post when his driver lost control of the vehicle and the vehicle collided with the guard rail on the side of the expressway.

According toa report filed by the Lanka Page web site, Mannapperuma was admitted to the Nagoda hospital in Kalutara and later transferred to the Colombo National Hospital where he underwent the amputation.

 

His police security officer has also undergone a similar amputation.

The driver has been arrested following the accident, the police media spokesperson's office has said.
