Employees of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), Sri Lanka's power authority, struck work on Tuesday in protest against an "illegal" salary increase for senior officers of the institution.

CEB Trade Union Alliance activists, according to a Lanka Page report, alleged that top ranking professionals and engineers have managed to obtain an under-the-table deal from the previous government that would increase their salaries by over 79 per cent.

Senior trade unionists said former CEB Chairman W. B. Ganegala has granted the special increase.

They said although they brought the massive injustice to the attention of the new Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka, nothing had been done to redress a blatant wrong.

The protest was held in front of the Ministry of Power and Energy after discussions with Ranawaka failed to yield the desired result.
