The Financial Crime Investigations Division (FCID) of Sri Lanka police has arrested the country's former Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa after recording his statement on a land issue.

The younger sibling of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa was out on bail and had arrived at the FDIC headquarters to give a statement in connection with a land issue in Matara city, reports the Colombo Page.

In April 2005, several officials, including Basil were arrested by the police, a day after he returned to the country from an overseas stay since his brother lost the presidential election in January 2015.

Former Secretary of the Economic Development Ministry Nihal Jayatilleke and former Divi Neguma Fund Director General R.R.K. Ranawaka were also arrested along with the Basil for allegedly misusing millions of rupees in public funds in the Divi Neguma Department.

They were released on bail on June 15, last year.

Their case is still pending in the Kaduwela Magistrate's Court.
