The Sri Lankan Navy on Wednesday confirmed that it has arrested 110 Indian fishermen on charges of violating the international maritime boundary that exists between the two countries.

Commander Kosala Warnakulasuriya, a spokesman of the Sri Lankan Navy, was quoted by a media report, as saying that the fishermen and their 15 fishing vessels were captured near the coast of Mullaitivu.

He further revealed that the fishermen and their vessels have been escorted to the Trincomalee harbour and have been handed over to Trincomalee Police for being produced before a magistrate for remand on Thursday.

The Indian High Commission in Colombo has sent an officer to Trincomalee to secure the release of the fishermen.

Before today's capture, 87 Indian fishermen were in Sri Lankan custody on similar charges.
