Lawyers have registered a strong protest in Moradabad and Lucknow over the murder of a member of their community in the Allahabad district court complex.

The lawyer was reportedly shot at by sub-inspector Shailendra Singh during an altercation with lawyers while bringing a criminal to the court. Singh used his service revolver to keep the lawyers at bay.

The deceased advocate has been identified as Nabi Ahmad.

Reacting to the incident, lawyers in Moradabad blocked traffic and shouted slogans against the police on Wednesday.

Traffic was brought to a standstill in the Pili Kothi area for about 30-minutes, and a petition was to be submitted to the district magistrate. Ashok Kumar, a protesting lawyer, said that the orders of the Bar Council would be followed in the matter.

The lawyers are demanding a compensation of Rs.1 crore to each of the families of the victims.

In Lucknow, about 50 protesting lawyers marched to the district magistrate's office and handed over a petition.

Lucknow district magistrate Raj Shekhar said the lawyers have been assured of strict and timely legal action.
