Lean beef diet help reduce blood pressure

A new study has found that eating lean beef can reduce risk factors for heart disease as it is the principal protein source in a Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) like diet, along with fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy.

Penny M. Kris-Etherton, Distinguished Professor of Nutrition, Penn State, said that this research added to the significant evidence, including work previously done in their lab, that supported lean beef's role in a heart-healthy diet and this study showed that nutrient-rich lean beef could be included as part of a heart-healthy diet that reduces blood pressure, which could help lower the risk for cardiovascular disease.

The researchers stated that this evidence suggested that it was the total protein intake and not the type of protein that was instrumental in reducing blood pressure, as part of a DASH-like dietary pattern.

The study is published in the Journal of Human Hypertension.
