A teacher has the ability to mould young minds and education acts as a fundamental block for both progress and reform.

Teachers play a huge role in this regard. Understanding the importance of having well-trained teacher to impart education, a training programme was recently organised in Leh by the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan.

The DIET trained five to six master trainers at each training centre who worked as a resource person and further provided training to other teachers.

The training focused on providing practical training to the teachers in order to help them reach their full potential.

"We were focusing on giving individual attention to each teacher. Almost 100 percent of teachers were covered under this five-day programme which focused on techniques and methodology of teaching. I fully believe that this training module is unique, child-friendly and is easy to train the teachers in," said K. Angmo, the principal of the District Institute of Education and Training.

The main focus of this programme was preparing lesson plans for the academic year.

This plays a major role in assisting teachers in planning ahead of time to encourage learning among students rather than being focussed on finishing the syllabus.

"This five-day training was very effective for us. The most important things that we learnt here was about classroom culture, classroom management and how to invest in children. I think that learning how to make a lesson plan would be very helpful for us and we will definitely implement this in our school in the future," said Raman Baley, a government school teacher.

The Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, which administers Leh, has assured that the syllabus will be modified to suit modern day requirements and promised more transparency in the transfer policy.

The quality of education being provided in government schools has room for improvement and such commendable initiatives by the government will definitely go a long way in raising the standard of education.
