California will soon make it legal for gay men to list themselves as "mother" on the birth record of the child, it has been revealed.
The law will also allow lesbians to cite themselves as "father" and the gay parent could simply opt for the more generic label of "parent," the Washington Times reported.
The lawmakers have passed the law through the state Assembly with a 51-13 vote a measure in an attempt to "modernize" the definition of the family and to reflect same-sex unions.
Currently, birth certificate documents in the state have a space for "mother" and another space for "father" and the new will head to the Senate next week, while it would take effect in 2016.
