Liberia's national existence has come under a 'serious threat' as the Ebola outbreak is spreading at a rapid pace, says the country's defence minister Brownie Samukai.

Samukai said in a statement to the United Nations Security Council that the global response to the outbreak in West Africa was weak.

The World Health Organization (WHO) warned that thousands of more cases could occur in Liberia, reported the BBC.

Around 2,288 people have died in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea since the Ebola outbreak.

The WHO said that half of the deaths occurred in just three weeks till September 6th.

In Senegal, one case has been confirmed while eight people died in Nigeria.
