Libya's ambassador to the US said that the Islamic State militants in the country grew strong following international disengagement after the fall of former ruler Muammar Qaddafi.
According to FOX News, Ibrahim Dabbashi also expressed skepticism that the international community has the will to militarily get involved again in Libya.
The statement came as the terror group released a video online showing the beheadings of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians by Islamic State militants on Libyan beaches.
Libya is yet to seek international military aid to fight the terror group.
Dabbashi said that the most important thing right now is to lift the arms embargo on Libya so that the national army has the means to battle Islamic State.
The ambassador's comments came a day after Egypt's president said in a radio interview that creating a UN-backed coalition was the best course of action to rid Libya of Islamic extremists, the report added.
