Libyan Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thinni has claimed that he survived an attack on his car in the city of Tobruk when gunmen attempted to assassinate him.

The BBC quoted Al-Thinni, as saying, "Thank God, we managed to escape," after bullets hit his car while it was leaving a parliament session in the city.

A government spokesman was further quoted, as saying that the Prime Minister escaped unharmed, but one of his bodyguards had been wounded in the attack.

Prime Minister Al-Thinni's power has been challenged by the establishment of another body in Tripoli that claims to be the legitimate government.

Libya has been in turmoil since Muammar Gaddafi was ousted from power in 2011.
