A two-year-old lioness died due to stomach and lung infection near Gir Wildlife sanctuary.

The carcass of the lioness was found in the mango farmland near the Girnar Mountain in Junagadh.

Riyaz Kadivar Veterinary Officer of Sakkarbuag Zoo in Junagadh said, "The primary reason behind the lioness death was that she was suffering from stomach and intestine infection. We also found some worms in her stomach which had infected the entire body. Her immunity was also very low. She died of stomach and intestinal infection."

The lions tend to become victims of hunters as they stray into the hermitages, which are close to the Gir Sanctuary.

The counting of the lions took place in 2010 and there are a total of four hundred and eleven lions in Gir Forest Sanctuary, Girnar Sanctuary and Mitiyala Sanctuary . However, many have died since then.
