Liverpool defeated nine-man Newcastle United 2-1 in their final game of the Premier League season to finish as runners up behind Manchester City, who won the title for a second time in three years.

Liverpool started the day trailing City by two points with a far inferior goal difference, hoping that they beat Newcastle and Manuel Pellegrini's side loses at home to West Ham United, so that Brendan Rodgers squad claims the league title.

However, City's 2-0 win over West Ham crushed Liverpool's hopes of a first league title in 24 years and Rodgers' squad finished second as the Premier League title race came to an end, the BBC reported.

Liverpool reportedly did their job of winning over Newcastle as defender Daniel Agger and striker Daniel Sturridge converted Steven Gerrrard's free kicks to cancel out Martin Skrtel's first-half own-goal.

But Liverpool's victory did not help them win the Premier League title as Pellegrini's men grabbed the title with their victory at Etihad Stadium, the report added.

Meanwhile, Liverpool can reportedly comfort themselves as they passed 100 league goals mark for only the second time in their history and made it to the Champions League for the first time since 2009-10 season.
