A London-based court has reportedly scheduled New Zealand cricket star Chris Cairns perjury trial for October next year after observing that it was a relative "cricket desert" as few major fixtures are scheduled in the month.

The decision was announced at Southwark Crown Court on Thursday when the cricketer's lawyer persuaded the court to schedule the hearing for October 2015 because it was the only time when potential witnesses would not be playing international or county cricket, reported Stuff.co.nz.

The cricketer has been charged with perjury in relation to a libel action that he brought against Indian Premier League Chairman Lalit Modi in England in 2012.

Cairns had won 90,000 pounds after he sued Modi over a 2010 tweet in which he accused the all rounder of match-fixing during his time in the now defunct Indian Cricket League. However, he has now been charged with perjury for making a false statement that said that "he had never cheated at cricket nor would he contemplate doing such a thing," reported News 24.

The 44-year-old said in a statement that he had nothing to hide and that he would do "whatever it takes" to clear his name.
