The Pakistan government is likely to appoint Lt Gen Raheel Sharif as its new Chief of Army Staff (COAS), after weeks of intense speculation.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif conveyed the promotions in a closed door meeting with Raheel, Dawn News reports.

According to the sources, Lt Gen Rashad Mahmood is being appointed as the Chairman Joint Chief of Staff Committee (CJCSC).

However, an official announcement of the appointments was not made yet.

According to the report, the senior most military officer Lt Gen Haroon Aslam, who is currently serving as Chief of Logistic Staff, seems to be ignored for the post.

Raheel is presently serving as Inspector General Training and Evaluation, whereas Mahmood is serving as Chief of General Staff.
