Madonna has reportedly been axed from Radio 1 playlist after the singer failed to meet their standards of "audience relevance" and "musical merit".

Sources said that at the end of the day it was all about relevance and the station had a duty to meet the needs of younger listeners, the Daily Star reported.

Sources continued that it was natural that as an artist gets older their audience goes elsewhere and Radio 1 had to reflect that.

Sources added that the audience was losing sleep that it is not playing the 56-year-old songs in the same way it used to.
