Addressing a group of protestors at Jantar Mantar who were demanding justice for Arunachal student Nido Taniam, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday said that a magisterial enquiry has been set up to find out the real culprits behind the death of Nido, and added he would make sure that they get the severest form of punishment.
"We have asked for a magisterial enquiry in this case. Some people had said that there was no need for it as the case was being enquired by the Delhi police, but when the police itself is one of the accused how can we trust their investigation," said Kejriwal.
"The enquiry will be over in three to four weeks, and we will get to know who all were involved. If the Delhi police would have handled the case alone we would have never got to know the truth," he said.
"There will be no delay in this case. If he does not get justice now he will never get it. Even if the police are involved, we will make sure that they get the most severe kind of punishment," he added.
He further asked the people protesting to form a committee to deal with these issues and said that the Delhi Government would notify it once it is formed.
"You all form a team or a committee and give us a list of names of the members of the committee and we will notify that committee on the behalf of the Delhi Government which deal with these issues," said Kejriwal.
The people protesting criticized Kejriwal for not being present at the day of the protest.
"Where was Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) when we protested in Lajpat Nagar? The party needs to be there for us if anything happens of this sort happens to us again if they think that even we are the people of this country," said one of the protestors.
"This is not the first time that a young person from the north east has been killed because of the way they look. We are fed up of the way in which the way we are victimized in this country. We are looking for solution and we want Nido to get justice," she said.
"How many more children will have to face this? If this is not discrimination done by the community, done by the police, than what is?" she said.
"Even the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) is a racist act, which suspects the young children of north east to be terrorists. Show us that after so many years of being a republic the time for change has come and we are not looking back," she said.
"This is not a one day road show we will be here till Nido does not get justice. We are asking for the permission of a committee which will look after all forms of discrimination against the people of the north east," she added.
A message from the victim's father was read out to the protestors and the AAP in which he had demanded capital punishment for the culprits.
"The father has demanded capital punishment for all the culprits and the suspension, and action against the two police personals who took his son to the crime spot, and allowed the mob to beat him up," said another protestor.
Delhi Urban Development and Education Minster Manish Sisodia said that Nido's case was a conspiracy to divide India.
"Whatever happened with Nido is conspiracies to divide the country .The culprits are people who want to cut out the country into parts," said Sisodia.
He also said that the history of the north east will be added in the test books of Delhi from the next session onwards.
"We also agree that the history of the north east should be included in Delhi text books and it would be adequately included from next session onwards," he said.
"I will try my best that the people of Delhi are taught to respect the people of the north east and to respect an Indians," he added.
Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Monday had met the protestors at Jantar Mantar and said that the culprits would not be spared.
Addressing the protest carried out by North Eastern activists, Rahul said, "My spirit and heart is with you. I am 100 percent with you. You can expect very strict action against people who did this."
Describing the incident as totally unacceptable, Gandhi assured that Nido will get justice, and the culprits will not be spared.
"There is only one India. And that India belongs to all of us. We are going to ensure you get respect in this country," he added.
Nido Taniam, a student from Arunachal Pradesh, had reportedly gone to Lajpat Nagar on January 29 in search of an address, and was allegedly mocked by someone at a shop for the style his hair.
In a fit of rage, Nido broke a glass at the shop but he paid money for that. Afterwards he was allegedly beaten with sticks.
The next day, when he didn't wake up, his friends rushed him to AIIMS, where he was declared dead.
