Magnitude 5.3 earthquake rattles Indonesia

An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter Scale hit 226 km North West of Saumlaki, Indonesia at 9

The earthquake struck at a depth of 4km, with the epicentre 52km north of Kebumen district, the Channel News Asia quoted spokesperson for the National Disaster Management Agency Sutopo Nugroho, as saying.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where continental plates collide prompting frequent volcanic activity.

Several houses, a school and a mosque were damaged and several residents were hit by falling debris, according to the report.
