A new poll says that a majority of Americans are of the view that members of extremist group Islamic State of Iraq and Levant are residing in the United States and are capable of orchestrating a massive terrorist attack in the country at any given time.

According to Politico, the survey, released by CNN/ORC International on Monday, shows that 71 percent of respondents think that members of the militant group ISIL have the capability and resources to carry out terrorist plots in the US.

Nearly 53 percent of those interviewed are "very concerned" about the threat ISIL poses to national security, while 34 percent are "somewhat concerned," the report says.

Meanwhile, 67 percent of the total respondents think that US president Barack Obama does not have a clear plan in place to tackle the ISIL.

About 61 percent respondents are opposed to the idea of sending in troops on the ground to fight the ISIL, the survey adds.
