The Maldivian Parliament has voted to impeach the Vice President Mohamed Jameel after accusing him of dereliction of duties.

According to News24, Jameel was ousted by a near unanimous vote as 78 lawmakers voted against him while only two voted for him and one abstained during the process.

Jameel's impeachment was proposed by his government colleagues and supported by the opposition.

The opposition supported the impeachment in what is believed to be an exchange for concessions for jailed opposition leader and ex-president Mohamed Nasheed.
