The man charged with injuring New Zealand cricketer Jesse Ryder in an alleged assault at a Christchurch bar 10 months ago is seeking to have the case dropped because of pre-trial publicity.
The 38-year-old defendant faces a charge of injuring Ryder with reckless disregard for his safety.
Last year he elected trial by jury and the case has been progressing through the pre-trial process.
The stay application was heard by Judge Brian Callaghan in the Christchurch District Court today.
Judge Callaghan ordered that the stay application be argued in chambers, in the presence of only the people involved in the case and the media.
He suppressed reporting of all the submissions and evidence heard at the hearing, except for the nature of the application and the outcome, Stuff.co.nz reports.
The hearing is continuing.
