New Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has admitted his team cannot afford a slow start to the season if they are to become challengers for the title.

According to the Mirror, the new City boss knows how vital it is to get his reign off to a flier and ensure they are not playing catch-up from early on in the season.

Pellegrini said that the English Premier League is a different league than the one in which he had worked before and it was important to win the first league game, along with hoping that his team will be prepared for the season ahead.

City has served notice of their intent to reclaim the title this season, having already spent 92.3 million pounds- with the promise of more to come, the report said.

However, despite such a significant outlay, Pellegrini, 59, does not think City is favourite for the title, even though he is happy with his players, and expressed that Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham had very good squads, the report added.
