Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has reportedly apologised following the appearance of pictures showing him dressed as a suicide bomber at a private party.

The England international, in an attempted comedy play on a popular 'Jagerbomb' drink, dressed in a costume consisting of empty bottles of German digestive drink 'Jagermeister' and cans of Red Bull strapped to his chest, during a fancy dress party hosted by him and his girlfriend at Christmas.

According to CNN, Smalling's management company Wasserman Media Group said in a statement that although the footballer fully accepts in hindsight that it was an ill-thought out and insensitive decision, however, no harm was intended whatsoever and he apologizes for any offense caused.

Smalling, who hopes to be part of the England squad to travel to Brazil for the 2014 World Cup, is not the only footballer to have courted controversy with a fancy dress outfit after the girlfriend of Stoke City's Jermaine Pennant recently posted a picture of him dressed as Osama Bin Laden at a New Year's Eve party, the report added.
