Australia's Marinko Matosevic has reportedly insisted he is not sexist after he criticised women's tennis on Tuesday as he became the first male player to publicly disapprove of Wimbledon champion Andy Murray's surprise decision to hire Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo as his new coach.

Matosevic, who beat Lukas Lacko to advance to the third round at Queen's Club on Wednesday, admitted that he did not think that highly of the women's game and said that he could never hire a female coach.

According to Sport24, Motosevic's compatriot Sam Stosur, who is in action on the women's tour in Birmingham this week, branded her male counterpart's comments as 'pig-headed', while he was also subjected to abuse on social media.

However, the World No. 60 reportedly refused to alter his stance and claimed that he was surprised by the fuss his comments had caused, saying that he was surprised because he though that his comments were pretty innocent.

Matosevic said that he likes Stosur, she is a lovely girl, both of them have the same manger, and that is a shame.

Matosevic added that women are a big inspiration to him and he did not mean it to come across as sexist at all, but it is a shame that it did.
