Mary Kom partnering with Vodafone to set up self-defence camps for women in India

Indian boxing champion MC Mary Kom is reportedly setting up women-only self-defence camps and an SMS service, with the help of mobile service provider Vodafone, to provide safety tips for women across India

The triumphs and travails of Kom's extraordinary life, from the paddy fields of Manipur to five-times world boxing champion and Olympic bronze medallist, include scenes of murder, heartbreak, racism and redemption, which would be soon portrayed on the silver screen by Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra.

According to The Guardian, Kom, who has run the MC Mary Kom Boxing Academy since 2006 to give disadvantaged Manipuri children structure, education and order, has with Vofadone's help, is setting up self-defence camps for women, along with SMS service, all over India, in a bid to improve women's lives in her homeland.

 

Kom said that women are scared to walk in public on their own in India, especially after the horrific Delhi gang-rape case of 2012, adding that now, more women are wanting to box and do self-defence.
