At least 17 people have died and hundreds injured in the massive explosions that hit China's northern city of Tianjin.

The blasts reportedly took place in a warehouse that stored "dangerous and chemical goods" in the port area of the city.

According to the BBC, pictures and videos on social media showed flames lighting up the sky, and buildings are said to have collapsed.

Hospitals in the city are believed to be overwhelmed with causalities.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged "all-out efforts" to rescue victims and contain the fire.
