McLaren's managing director Jonathan Neale has given an indication that former world champion Jenson Button will retire from Formula One at the end of the season.

Neale admitted that Button is a world champion and an important part of his team who has been associated with McLaren from last six seasons, the Guardian reported.

The F1 team, however, has an option to retain Button for the 2016 season, but the latter's contract with the McLaren will expire this month.

The 53-year-old further insisted that his team desperately want to stop Button from leaving, but they have to respect the latter's decision who is not interested in staying.

It is speculated that Button, after his retirement, would switch to the famous Le Mans-style World Endurance Championship.

Button is the Britain's longest-serving F1 racer, who has achieved 15 wins in 278 races.
