A batch of Indian students studying in a medical college in Nepal has arrived in Rajkot after being rescued from the Himalayan nation.

They reached the border town of Gorakhpur in a bus arranged by the college authorities, and continued their journey to Rajkot by train.

"It was almost the same as the earthquake that hit Gujarat in 2001, and we were so scared. We ran down but there were still tremors. When the earthquake was over, we went out of our rooms and contacted our college authorities and they helped us a lot," said Jeel Lalsania, a medical student.

Meanwhile, a group of 60 tourists from Kochi, who were touring Nepal when the disaster struck, returned home safely on Tuesday.

"We never knew what was happening there. Only after returning to Gorakhpur we saw the TV. Then we started knowing every minute of it and it is horrible," said Siddharth, a tourist.

Over 4,700 people have died in the 7.9 magnitude earthquake which hit Kathmandu last week.

Nepal Prime Minister Sushil Koirala has said that the death toll due to the could reach 10,000, with information on casualties and damage from far-flung villages and towns yet to come in.

India has pressed in massive services to evacuate people from affected areas.

India has sent 13 military aircrafts; four C 17 Globemasters, three C 130 Hercules, four Il 76 and two AN 32 transport planes to Kathmandu to ferry Indian nationals stuck in the Nepalese capital and also deliver essential relief material.

International aid has arrived in Nepal, but disbursement has been slow, partly because aftershocks have sporadically closed the airport.
