Two French bulldogs started a medical emergency after chewing through their owner's prescription pills and chomping on a St John medic alert panic button.

The dogs, Stella and Stuart, had pills in their mouth and had activated the panic button 12 times by the time the paramedics arrived at the Orewa house north of Auckland, Stuff.co.nz reported.

The dogs were given an intestinal absorbent to try and mop up any drugs left over and their blood test showed that they were both doing well.
