Meghalaya flood toll reaches 25, relief camps set up

Constant rainfall since the last five days here has claimed the lives of 25 people till now, while another 24 persons are reportedly missing.

The death toll includes eight deaths in Shillong, seven in South West Garo hills, five in North Garo hills, three in Nongstoin and one each in East Garo hills and Khliehriat.

Five districts of Garo Hills region have been severely hit in the state. The District machineries are carrying out search and rescue operations and have opened more than sixty relief camps in the affected areas.

"On one hand Guwahati got heavy rains and on the other hand there has been very heavy run-off of water from the adjoining hills of Meghalaya," informed Pritam Saikia, the deputy commissioner of Goalpara district.

 

The District Machinery and BSF are providing ration, food and water to the affected people in the relief camps.
