Taking a jibe at Mehbooba Mufti over her bizarre statement blaming the media for yesterday's terror attacks, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy on Saturday said the high voter turnout in Jammu and Kashmir is a matter for celebration, and added that the PDP chief should now tell the Pakistanis to contain their jealousies.

Swamy said the media has not told any lies as far as the voter turnout in the state is concerned.

"They have not exaggerated; they have given the exact figures which the Election Commission gave. What she is saying that Pakistan will get jealous if we beat our drums about it? Why shouldn't we? This is our country," Swamy told ANI here.

"We have been saying all these years that Kashmiri people are suppressed. In the secular government of UPA, only 30 percent voted. In this Hindu government of BJP, more than 70 percent have voted. It's a matter for celebration and Mehbooba should now tell the Pakistanis to contain their jealousies," he added.

The PDP chief had yesterday said that the media's focus and reporting on the high voter turnout in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly election is the reason for the attacks in four places in the valley.

Earlier on Friday, the militants struck in a big way in Jammu and Kashmir, storming an Army camp in Uri in Baramulla district and following it up with multiple attacks in Srinagar, Tral and Shopian.

The attack came just three days after a 72 percent voter turnout was registered in the second phase of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is scheduled to visit the state on December 8 to campaign for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Srinagar, condemned the terror attacks as 'desperate attempts' to derail the atmosphere of hope created by the increased voter turnout and saluted the soldiers who laid down their lives for the nation.

The result of the assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir will be announced on December 23.
