Mercedes to recall 400,000 cars in UK over faulty airbags

ANI London [UK]

Global automobile manufacturer Mercedes-Benz announced that it will recall over 400,000 cars from across the United Kingdom (UK), after incidents of premature deployment of airbags came to the fore.

The luxury car maker announced a recall of A, B, C, E and CLA models, built between November 2011 and July 2017, as suggested by local media reports.

While no casualties were reported on account of the fault that was detected, Mercedes said the clock spring model in the steering column will be replaced, as failing to do so could break it, causing the airbag to deploy at the wrong time.

In a bid to maintain the safety of its consumer base and promote safe driving, Mercedes initiated the recall to replace the steering column module clock spring, which, if broken, could trigger an incorrect airbag warning. Also, if the wiring isn't correctly earthed, the airbag could deploy.

Further details are awaited.
