Hollywood celebrities like Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet and Emma Thompson are now showing their support for a campaign that demands the Amnesty International to reject a proposal to endorse the decriminalisation of the sex trade.
According to the reports from the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women (CATW), the global human rights group will be reviewing an internal policy document on sex work at a meeting in Dublin in August, reported the Guardian.
It is being said that if the policy is adopted then the organisation would advocate the legalisation of pimping, brothel owning and sex buying that are the pillars of a 99 billion dollar global sex industry.
In a letter addressed to the organisation's secretary general, executive director Steven Hawkins and the board of directors, the petition filed by 3,000 members of the public has been explained.
The letter reads, "Amnesty's reputation in upholding human rights for every individual would be severely and irreparably tarnished if it adopts a policy that sides with buyers of sex, pimps and other exploiters rather than with the exploited.
