Barcelona star Lionel Messi along with his father, Jorge has been ordered to appear in the court following charges of defrauding tax authorities of more than four million pounds.

According to the Guardian, the Argentina player could face up to 22-months in prison if found guilty.

Reacting to the matter, Barcelona has expressed its support to the player and his family, adding that the club would continue to offer them affection in the legal, fiscal and administrative aspects of these proceedings.

"FC Barcelona to give 'full support' to Leo Messi," they also wrote on Twitter.

Meanwhile, the judge in charge had rejected public prosecutor's plea to try only Jorge.

Messi has currently been ruled out of the World Cup qualifying matches for Argentina and Barcelona due to knee injury.

The duo were earlier charged in 2013 after which they paid five million euros as a 'corrective payment' to the tax authorities.
