Metallica celebrated their controversial debut at Britain's iconic Glastonbury festival by inviting hundreds of fans onstage to watch their performance up close.

The band's frontman James Hetfield addressed the controversy over the band's inclusion saying that they are grateful to be invited to such an event called Glastonbury, Contactmusic reported.

Hetfield added that they felt proud being there and representing the "heavier sides of music".

More than 200 festival-goers lined up at the rear of the enormous platform behind Lars Ulrich's drum kit, cheering and dancing throughout the gig.
