Mexican drug lord Joaquin El Chapo Guzman has resorted to reading a Christian-oriented self-help book in prison after being denied access to television.

El Chapo, who was captured recaptured this January following his escape last July, has read the classic Don Quijote and has now started on a Spanish-language version of The Purpose Driven Life: What on Earth Am I Here for? by Rick Warren, a California-based evangelical pastor, said reports.

Meanwhile, it is reported that his food is first tested by a dog and later the guards wait 15 minutes before giving the meal to the Mexican drug lord.

A federal official said that El Chapo is under special security measures after his escape through a tunnel last time, reports new.com.au.
