The shootout between security forces and an armed gang in the Mexican state of Michoacan has left at least 43 people dead.

According to the BBC and the Daily Star, the gunfight took place in Tanhuato near the Jalisco state border.

The violence is believed to be the result of a drug related issue wherein at least one police officer was killed, said officials.

For years, the authorities have been fighting the most powerful drug cartel, Jalisco New Generation, in the area.

National Security Commissioner Monte Alejandro Rubido was quoted, as saying that most of the people killed belonged to the drug cartel.
