Michelle Obama to open 2015 Special Olympics in Los Angeles

US First Lady Michelle Obama will soon take off for Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to open the 2015 Special Olympics World Games on July 25.

The chairman of the Special Olympics, Tim Shriver, said that they chose US President Barack Obama's wife to kick off the events because her vision of wellness, fitness and inclusion of all in sports, which is at the heart of Special Olympics, Channel 24 reported.

Notably, Special Olympics is all about promoting and motivating athletes with intellectual disabilities, who compete in 26 different sports including swimming, basketball, track and field, and gymnastics.

The CEO and president of the games, Patrick McClenahan, mentioned that the nine-day competitions would be a real gala of the theme, which says celebrating courage, determination and joy, and creating awareness that leads to acceptance and inclusion.

 

In addition to this, the opening ceremony will have some performances by singer Stevie Wonder and Avril Lavigne, parade of 7,000 athletes from around the world and a ceremonial lighting of a torch.
