Microsoft has reportedly been working on a non-Windows operating system since 2008, called the 'Midori' operating system.
Sources have revealed that the project, which is now part of the Unified Operating System group under Executive Vice President Terry Myerson, has language, codenamed "M#," ("M Sharp"), CNET reported.
The language is an extension of Microsoft's C# language and grew out of Sing#, which is the system language of Microsoft Research's Singularity OS.
Aleks Bromfield, a former member of the Midori language team said that the M# should be the lowest-level language, which will be safe and productive enough to be appropriate for writing higher-level systems, like Web services.
