Microsoft will include real-time co-authoring for Word documents in Office 2016, the next major version of Microsoft's desktop suite of apps.

Microsoft confirmed that the new feature will be first enabled in Word and subsequently it will enable it in PowerPoint and Excel, reported the Verge.

The addition to Microsoft's Office suite gives the company a distinct advantage over competitors like Google.

Co-authoring on the desktop removes one of the key benefits of using the web versions of Google Docs or Office.

However, the real-time editing feature is not yet available but Microsoft is allowing users to download a preview of Office 2016.
