When it comes to the wheels, middle aged men prefer sleek, sexy sports cars or brawny motorcycles, while women of the age go for more practical drive.

To know why, Ipsos Public Affairs carried out a survey of 1,005 U.S. adults on behalf ofCarMax, and found that on a whole, 25 percent of participants admitted they were likely to buy "a car associated with a midlife crisis", Fox News reported.

There were considerable differences between male and female respondents, as while 30 percent of men were "very" or "somewhat likely" to purchase midlife crisis vehicle, only 21 percent of women said the same.

It was also found that the color red, considered to be a classic on midlife ride, wasn't the top choice, as 20 percent said that they'd pick black, 19 percent chose silver or gray, 17 percent each picked blue and red and yellow bagged just two percent.

Also, while 24 percent men said that they'd opt for a black ride, 21 percent of women chose red.

Gender differences continued when it came to type of car as well, with top choice among men being sports car, which got 24 percent of the male vote, and SUV being women's with 19 percent.

Meanwhile, the Chevrolet Corvette and Ford Mustang were top favorites for the ride.
