Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta has written off his side's Champions League chances after just one match, as they lost 2-0 to Borussia Dortmund in their group-stage opener.

Arteta was brutal in his assessment of their recent defeat and warned that Arsenal must improve dramatically or can forget their chances of European success for another year.

The Spaniard admitted that Arsene Wenger's men made basic mistakes in Tuesday night's match in Germany, invited Dortmund to attack them and said that they must bounce back away to high flying Aston Villa on the weekend, The Mirror reported.

Arteta said that if one makes the mistakes that Arsenal did, against top sides, they know that there is no chance to win the Champions League. He added that they encouraged Dortmund to do that by giving the ball away so many times in very difficult positions.

The skipper said that he is bitterly disappointed, adding that he is very disappointed because they knew their strengths, what they had to avoid and what they did was encourage Dortmund to play their game.

Arteta said that Arsenal has to react, adding that they have to analyse what they have done wrong and try to improve. He said that in four days, they have another game and that is the best thing, another game to try to react and improve.
