A Milan-bound Germanwings flight was halted on the runway on Sunday evening after authorities received a bomb threat against the aircraft as it awaited takeoff at Cologne Bonn airport.

The pilot of flight 4U826 was contacted by air traffic controllers after German police received a bomb threat, reported The Guardian.

All passengers and crew members were safely evacuated from the plane which was scheduled to take off for Milan's Malpensa airport at 6.20pm.

Germanwings said that the aircraft was then examined by authorities and specially trained dogs.

The flight was carrying 126 passengers.

The bomb threat came just weeks after co-pilot Andreas Lubitz deliberately crashed a Germanwings aircraft into the French Alps, killing all 150 people onboard.
