Many UK citizens think that cucumbers, courgettes and avocados - technically fruit, as they have seeds - are vegetables, according to a survey.

The survey conducted by GardeningExpress.co.uk, showed that just 51 percent people of the country could correctly identify a tomato as a fruit while 91 per cent believe that a pepper is a vegetable, the Daily Express reported.

Only one percent correctly said that peas were fruit, while 97 percent were left confused over olives and aubergines, claiming that they are vegetables.

Just 14 percent could identify courgettes as fruit while 93 percent thought pumpkins are vegetables.

Four percent of those polled knew that butternut squash is a fruit with only 34 percent correctly identifying a cucumber as a fruit.
