Hurriyat Conference (moderate) chairperson, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, was detained on Friday by Jammu and Kashmir police before his march towards besieged Jamia Masjid in Srinagar.
The joint resistance leadership, including Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik had asked people to march towards the Jamia Masjid located in Nowhatta area of Srinagar today.
They had asked people to march towards to break the siege around it which has remained intact since July 9.
The state government has disallowed mandatory congregational Friday prayers since July 9, a day after popular militant commander Burhan Wani was killed by forces in the Bemdoora area of Islamabad district.
Since then, Kashmir has remained shut and at least 96 civilians have died and 15500 others injured.
As the pro-freedom leadership called for a march towards the Jamia Masjid Srinagar which is situated in Old Srinagar, the government imposed a curfew in six police stations in Srinagar to disallow the scheduled march.
