The Congress Party on Thursday accused the policies pursued by the Centre of facilitating farmer suicides, stating that 'Modi and Mausam' have killed the farmers in the country.
"The farmer and the farm labourer of this country, the 'ann-data', is committing suicide from farms, fields and villages and right up to the door steps of the Parliament. Why is it happening? The reasons are the Modi government and the weather. Modi and Mausam, both have killed the farmer. The crop is not being bought by government agencies, the farmer is not given adequate compensation, he has no money to buy fertilisers and seeds, he has no agriculture credit and he is being driven to suicide by the anti-farmer policies of the Modi government," Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala told ANI.
"We request the Prime Minister to visit the fields of the farmers rather than visiting foreign nations, see their problems and their abject poverty and see to it that the government gives a comprehensive package to halt the spate of farmer suicides," he added.
Speaking of the suicide of farmer Gajendra Singh, who hanged himself during an Aam Aadmi Party rally against the Land Acquisition Bill, Surjewala put the onus of his death on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
"Even 74 minutes after the suicide, Arvind Kejriwal continued with the rally. Does such a person deserve to be a leader? The onus of Gajendra's death lies on Kejriwal. The Aam Aadmi Party's response was also shocking. What lame-duck excuses are Kejriwal and his leaders giving?" he said.
Gajendra had committed suicide on Wednesday by hanging himself from a tree during an Aam Aadmi Party rally against the land Acquisition Bill in the national capital.
As per reports, a suicide note was found that revealed the farmer, who had three children, was banished from his house after his crop was damaged. He took the extreme step because he had no means of support his family.
