Binyamin Netanyahu's 2012 claim that Iran was a year away from making a nuclear bomb was reportedly contradicted by Israel's Mossad spy agency, according to leaked cables.

The Guardian reports that it is part of a cache of hundreds of dossiers, files and cables from the world's major intelligence services - one of the biggest spy leaks in recent times.

A secret report shared with South Africa a few weeks following Netanyahu's declaration revealed that Israel's intelligence agency reached the conclusion that Iran was "not performing the activity necessary to produce weapons".

The revelation comes ahead of Netanyahu's scheduled address to the US Congress on 3 March.
