The mother of Mohammad Akhlaq, who was brutally killed over alleged rumours that his family consumed and stored beef in their house, while explaining the unfortunate incident on Thursday said that the police had to literally snatch his body from the attackers.

"A large number of people came knocking our door and started abusing us. They entered the house through back door after they failed to break the front door. They started hitting my son. They attacked my son so brutally, that if police would have not come, then we would have not got his body. The police literally snatched the body from the attackers. Pehle maar daala phir use maiyyat se bhi mehroom kar diya (first they killed him, then they prevented his last rites too)," mother of the deceased Akhlaq told ANI here.

"I request the government to punish the culprits as soon as possible. Strict action should be taken to avoid such incidents here," another relative of the deceased told ANI.

50-year-old Akhlaq, the father of an Indian Air Force personnel, was beaten to death by a mob in Dadri, Uttar Pradesh, on Monday night, over alleged rumours that his family consumed and stored beef in their house.

The family has maintained that the meat stored in their fridge was mutton and not beef. Meanwhile, officials have sent the meat samples for a forensic test.
